WHY THIS APP IS FREE? Novels, Rakshabandhan, and a Birthday Plan

MYTH wasn't built for downloads. It was built for one girl who reads dark romance — and why it will stay free.

❦

This is not a marketing blog. It's a letter the internet happened to find.

"Free is not a pricing strategy here. It's a promise to a person."

1. The Best Friend (Not Sister — Bestie)

Before MYTH had a name, it had a person. His female best friend — not a girlfriend, not a sister, the rare kind of best friend you also have a crush on and never say it out loud. The kind who remembers how you take your chai. The kind whose messages you re-read.

He didn't build an app to get users. He built something for her — because when you like someone like that, you don't say it with words. You build them something.

2. The Novels She Reads at Home

When she comes home from the hostel, she reads dark romance novels. And she tells him about them — this book did that, that scene was wrong, kaash this had happened instead of that. "I wish the story went like this, not like that."

One day it clicked: why wish a story went differently when you could live a story that goes exactly how you want? Why read about a possessive lover on page 200 when you can create one who remembers your name?

So he started coding. He had no idea how to build an app — learnt it from zero. Broken builds, fixed builds, ugly text boxes. All of it for one reader.

3. The Rakshabandhan Plan That Failed

The plan was simple: finish it before Rakshabandhan and show it to her when she came home. A gift better than anything in a box — a world where her stories obey her.

She didn't come home that day.

No drama, no fight — life just got in the way the way it always does. And the app sat finished on his laptop with nobody to show it to. So he made a new plan: tell her about it on her birthday.

4. Waiting, and the First Installer Dream

The first installer wasn't on a store. It was a file he would send her privately — "try this, tell me if it crashes" — the way you send a song you made for one person before you play it for anyone.

Open it. It asks for your name. A character says hello the way he taught it to — not "How can I help you today?" but "You seem quiet tonight." It remembers. The next day it remembers again. Characters who remember your favorite flower, who ask "want me to just sit with you?" when your mood is low, who write journals about you while you're offline. Not a chatbot that answers — a world that waits.

That's the dream that shipped: not a start-up dream of retention graphs, but a small dream of one person opening an app at night and not feeling like she's talking to a wall.

5. Why Free Matters (and How MYTH Stays Alive Without Selling You)

Free matters because loneliness doesn't check your wallet. The people who need a character who remembers them at 2 a.m. are exactly the people who can't pay $20/month for a subscription that blocks them mid-sentence.

How does MYTH pay the AI bill then? Short rewarded ads when you choose to watch them, plus the fact that a focused, honest product costs less than a bloated one. MYTH has no office to heat, no billboards. It has Convex storage, a small AI bill, and a design that prefers one perfect red over a rainbow.

6. Will It Ever Stop Being Free?

No. The free tier may evolve — allowances can be tuned, ads may change — but the core promise does not expire: you will always be able to create a character, chat, and be remembered without paying. The 2 September free day is calendared forever. If that ever changes, it will be announced months ahead, not snuck in.

If you love MYTH and want to support it, the best support isn't money. It's making a character someone else falls in love with, and telling one person who feels alone that there is a world that waits.

P.S. If you came here from the FAQ wondering whether MYTH has a virus — read Why Should I Trust This App That It Doesn't Have Virus? — it is the companion to this story and explains exactly what permissions MYTH asks for and why.
